Importing and Exporting Goods By Sea Made Easy

Sea freight can feel complicated. There's paperwork, biosecurity checks, and rules that seem to multiply overnight. Our freight forwarder team handles these parts so your ocean freight journey feels smooth from start to finish.

Most shipments need documents such as a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and certificates that depend on the product. Some goods also need extra checks for quarantine or biosecurity. We handle the details and explain what matters so you're never left guessing.

If you want proper guidance without stress, chat with our team. We work with current legislation, so you get advice that's simple, accurate, and always helpful.

Customs Clearance For Sea Freight

Customs clearance is the part of sea freight in Melbourne that leaves most people a bit lost. It involves various forms, rules and checks by authorities. The goal is simple. Ensure your goods meet the laws of the arriving country and ensure the correct duties and taxes are paid.

Here's a simple overview of how we get things done:

1. Prepare documents
You will need a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and any extra documents based on your product.

2. Classify goods
The Harmonised System code tells customs exactly what you are shipping.

3. Pay duties and taxes
The amount depends on value, product and origin. Some free trade agreements reduce costs.

4. Undergo inspection
Customs may check your goods to confirm they're compliant and not restricted.

5. Clear customs
Once the paperwork is right and payments are settled, your cargo is cleared.

6. Arrange delivery
Your goods then move on to their final destination.

An expert customs agent can save you time and keep things tidy. If you need more guidance, simply reach out to the Powerhouse International team.

Ocean Freight Melbourne

Hiring a customs broker for ocean freight is one of the smartest decisions you can make. Sea freight is steady and cost effective, but the rules behind it can shift quickly. A good broker keeps you ahead of the curve. Here's why they matter:

1. Expert knowledge
Brokers live and breathe regulations. They understand the technical details and make sure your cargo stays compliant from the moment it leaves your hands.

2. Faster processing
Accurate paperwork speeds everything up. A broker knows exactly what customs wants to see, which means fewer hold ups and fewer surprises at the border.

3. Cost savings
Trade agreements, tariff treatments, and exemptions can make a real difference. A skilled broker knows where the savings are hidden and helps you claim them.

4. Lower risk
Mistakes at customs are expensive. Brokers spot issues early and prevent problems before they have a chance to slow your shipment or inflate your costs.

5. Convenience
They take on the tasks that drain time and attention. You stay focused on your work while they keep the clearance process moving.

6. Support when things go wrong
If something unexpected occurs, a broker steps in quickly. They speak with customs officers, explain the situation, and get the shipment back on track.

7. Peace of mind
There's a certain comfort in knowing an expert is watching every detail. It keeps the whole sea freight process smoother and far less stressful.

Case Studies

Complex Cargo

Coordinating all the international transport to a very remote location

The Challenge:

One of our clients had secured the contract to supply an immense Batching plant to the Kittila Gold mine located in Lapland (northern Finland). This region is very remote and situated close to the Arctic circle. As such there was only a very narrow window of 10 weeks when all the cargo could be delivered to site during the northern summer.

The componentry required had to be sourced from a number of locations throughout Asia and Europe and collectively there was over 4000m3.

Complex Cargo

Transporting a large oversize piece of cargo that required from/to the water and barge delivery to site

The Challenge:

This consignee contacted Powerhouse to request our assistance for arranging all the technical shipping and Customs/Quarantine requirements involved to transport their pontoons from the factory in China to installation at the new City cat terminals on the Brisbane river.

With each pontoon measuring approximately 22.6ml x 9.05mw x 2.15 mh x 52 tonnes the shipping options were limited. In addition, as the goods had to be discharged to water (due to their size) and cleared through Customs and Quarantine, a specific import process had to be created.

Requiring A Blend Of Services

The Challenge:

We were contacted by a client who made preparations to row a boat all the way from the USA to Australia. Their concern was that there was a very narrow weather window on when the row could be commenced and they could not afford the goods to be damaged in transit.

Transporting A Commercial Aircraft by land and sea

The Challenge:

The Qantas Museum in Longreach purchased a large commercial aircraft (Lockheed Super Constellation) from the Philippines which had been residing in a grass paddock (beside the main airport runway) since 1986. This model of aircraft had been used extensively by Qantas on their long haul international flights and would be a vital component of the Qantas story at the museum. They contacted us initially as the plane was in no condition to fly and they required a specialist project logistics company to help them arrange the extraction, dismantling and transport to Australia.

Transporting Inaccessible oversize Cargo

The Challenge:

The owner of a large Combined Harvester had successfully sold their machine to a sugar cane plantation in Fiji. Once this transaction had been completed they contacted a number of international forwarding specialists to get a quote on arranging all the transport requirements. Unfortunately, due to the challenges involved, they were unable to find anyone who was interested in assisting.

They contacted Powerhouse Queensland after a referral from one of the project carriers in our network. We began the process with an onsite meeting to view the goods and assess all possible transportation options. The first challenge was that the machine itself had been positioned at the rear of a large residential block for some years and due to property changes in the area had become inaccessible.

Strategizing For A Restricted Budget

The Challenge:

A cruise company in Airlie beach purchased 2 landing barges from Thailand which they planned to use for transporting tourists to remote coral cays and islands in the Whitsundays.
The transport costs they had received from other logistic companies exceeded their budget and they contacted Powerhouse Queensland to see if we could provide a more cost effective solution.
